Did this affect a town's ability to be self sufficient? He said improved public transport would make it easier for shoppers to come in but also to go out and shop elsewhere. Mr Ferguson began by agreeing that the deprivation in Kirkby was worse than that experienced in St Helens.He then went on to describe the  massive period of change  that St Helens had undergone in recent years with the decline in the traditional industries of glass making and coal mining.
